BOSTON — Waku, a Boston-based beverage startup, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support expansion plans. The company markets a range of bottled herbal tea formulated with botanical ingredients responsibly sourced from Ecuadorian farmers in the Andes Mountains.

Founders Nico Estrella and Juan Giraldo partnered with food scientists and nutritionists to develop the recipes, inspired by a traditional Ecuadorian wellness beverage promoting digestive health and anti-inflammatory properties. Waku teas are caffeine-free with 6 grams of prebiotic fiber per bottle and no added sugars or artificial flavors. Flavors include lemon, ginger lemon, passion fruit and raspberry rose. Products may be purchased at livewaku.com.

Waku partnered with Republic, an investment crowdfunding platform, with the goal to raise up to $1.07 million by May 1. The funding will be used for marketing, product development, launching new products and expanding its team.

“We are very excited about our partnership with Republic, since it enables us to welcome Waku fans, customers and anyone wanting to join our mission to replenish the world with the home-grown flavors of Ecuador, as investors,” Mr. Giraldo said.  “Together, we can now share in the future wins of Waku.”

Previously, the brand raised $1 million from Branch Venture Group, Boston Impact Initiative and angel investors with experience in retail and consumer products industries. Investors may learn more at republic.com/waku.
