NEW YORK — Plant-based meal delivery brand Splendid Spoon has raised $12 million in a funding round led by Swedish investment company Nicoya.
Founded in 2013, Splendid Spoon offers a selection of plant-based, gluten-free smoothies, shots, soups, grain bowls and noodles. Prior to launching the business, Nicole Centeno, a former research biologist, attended culinary school and created a line of meals that initially were sold at farmers markets and pop-ups in Brooklyn, NY. The company has since adopted a direct-to-consumer subscription-based model that has more than 20,000 subscribers across the country.
“Splendid Spoon has emerged as an innovator in the healthy eating category by efficiently streamlining the business model and connecting with its avid customer base,” said Christopher Slim, chief executive officer at Nicoya. “Nicole’s vision a decade ago, to simplify plant-based eating for everyday Americans, is as important as ever, and we’re excited to take an active role in Splendid Spoon’s growth.”
Splendid Spoon will use the new funding to scale its core product line, launch new products and meal programs and expand its team.
“We are thrilled to join the Nicoya portfolio and to be a part of their movement to transform the global food system and create meaningful impact for people, planet and health,” Ms. Centeno said.
Additional investors contributing to the round include Danone Manifesto Ventures, Torch Capital, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Rent the Runway co-founder Jennifer Fleiss, and Ashok and Meera Vasudevan, founders of Tasty Bite, which was acquired by Mars, Inc.
